Swinging '60s icon Twiggy, whose real name is Leslie Lawson, is now a dame! During a recent ceremony at Buckingham Palace, Prince Charles awarded her the honor for her services to fashion, the arts and charity.
How does one become a dame or knight? According to the UK’s government website: “This is awarded for having a major contribution in any activity, usually at national level. Other people working in the nominee’s area will see their contribution as inspirational and significant, requiring commitment over a long period of time.”
Twiggy’s career took off when she was 16. Her long lashes, pixie cut, and androgynous look quickly made her an international fashion icon, and she came to represent the mod look of '60s. The UK’s Daily Express dubbed her, “The Face of 1966.”
Fifty-three years later, the Prince of Wales told her at the ceremony, “About time you got this. We’re all thrilled for you,” according to the Daily Express.
The 69-year-old was dressed to the nines for the event, wearing a sleek, white three-piece suit by Stella McCartney topped with a cheeky hat. She was thrilled with the award, calling it a “brilliant day.”
She added, “Officially it’s Dame Lesley, but call me Dame Twiggy. I think Dame Twiggy sounds best.”
