Hollywood and song legend Doris Day is turning 97 this week! And to celebrate, the longtime animal lover held a series of events over the weekend in Carmel, California, to benefit the Doris Day Animal Foundation.
Loyal Doris Day fans and animal lovers alike flocked to Carmel to watch a 60th anniversary screening of Pillow Talk, the romantic comedy in which she co-starred with Rock Hudson. Event attendees could also participate in live auctions, a raffle, dog adoptions, and more.
On the day of her birthday, Wednesday, April 3, Day plans to celebrate quietly with friends at home and enjoy her favorite dessert, Edy’s slow-churned chocolate fudge ice cream.
"On her actual birthday we'll just have a small dinner at home for her, and some of her close friends will come over," Bob Bashara, Day's business manager and friend, told Good Morning America. "She really likes ice cream. We're thinking of getting her an ice cream cake."
An interesting twist is that Day didn’t know her actual age until just two years ago. For most of her life, she thought she had been born in 1924, which would make her two years younger. It wasn’t until her 95th birthday in 2017 that she learned her true date of birth after the Associated Press obtained her birth certificate showing the year she was born was 1922.
Day was as surprised as anyone else. She said in a statement: “I’ve always said that age is just a number, and I have never paid much attention to birthdays, but it’s great to finally know how old I really am!”
